College Scholarships: What Makes a Good Candidate

by Mary Poodel

College can be very expensive for students with limited resources. It can even be expensive for students that have been saving money for a while in order to attend college and earn their degree.

Many students use student loans to pay for their college tuition. The unfortunate thing about student loans is that you will have to pay that money back after graduating. One great way to pay for college is to use college scholarships.

College scholarships can be a great way to help with your college tuition bill because, unlike student loans, it is money that you will not have to pay back. The other great thing about college scholarships it that there are numerous scholarships available, increasing the likelihood that you will be chosen as the recipient of one or more.

The length of the college scholarship application process can depend a great deal on the type of scholarship that you are applying for. Most scholarships require that you complete an application and some even require you to go through an interview process.

Be sure to completely read the applications for all college scholarships that you are applying for. You should be sure that you meet the qualifications of the scholarship to avoid filling out an application for a scholarship which you don’t have a chance of being awarded.

Always include all of your accomplishments and awards on your scholarship applications. The more accomplishments that you have listed, the better your chances of being awarded the scholarship will be.

Be sure to vary your responses on each scholarship that you are applying for. The scholarship reviewers can easily spot a generic application letter and if they feel that yours is not unique, they probably won’t award you the scholarship.

There are many things that set you apart from the other scholarship applicants, so take some time to think about what makes you unique. Once you have determined what sets you apart from the others, make sure to highlight this in your application letter. The people that review the applicants will be more likely to award the scholarship to someone that has made a point to set them self apart.
